Sunday Feb. 21

Didn't feel very good this morning, didn't go to S. S. Ray and girls went to K. to see his mama and dady. Started raining about 10, didn't last, just cloudy. Ray saw Mr. Howell and Buddy Story, Mr. Howell told Ray he could keep his buckskin mare to use as long as we wanted. Then if we wanted to buy her later, he would let us know. We sure can't afford another horse. Ray went to get shrimp, no luck. Went up to the lot, pulled grass from around my plants. Ray hoed some weeds and blackberries, hoe was dull. Girls picked up 11 buckets of cow manure each, put under the trees where I want the azelias. Paid them 20¢ each. The calves sure are hurting the small camphor tree. Stopped at Wares, watched "Wild Kingdom" and "Return to Oz" in color. Didn’t see Dady today. Ruth and Aunt Blanche stopped for a few minutes.

Camphor tree

Camphor trees are considered an invasive species in Florida. Invasive or not, I have fond memories of one particular camphor tree. When I was a child, the large camphor tree in my granny and papa’s yard was the perfect climbing tree. My brother and I would play in the tree for hours when we were little and as a teen I spent hours up there reading. I can still see those glossy, leathery leaves and imagine the smell released when the leaves were broken.
