Mon. Jan. 11

Misty rain all day, cooler tonite. Used heater. Ray and Dady finished hog pen, moved them up there, nice pen. Went to town to pay some bills, did some S.S. visiting also. Dady had supper with us. I baked a chicken, Peg made gingerbread, Tricia a miniature cake. I made a guava coffee cake like mama used to. Baited.

In addition to guava coffee cake, Myrtle’s mama would also make guava upside down cake. Basically the same as pineapple upside down cake, guava slices replaced the pineapple.

Guavas are relatively easy to grow in Florida and the fruit uses in these baked goods came from trees in the yard.

Myrtle also made homemade guava butter, which she canned. She used her mama’s mirro aluminum cone sieve (a metal cone with small holes supported by a metal stand) to mash the guavas.

Are you a baker? Have you used guava in your recipes? If so, share your recipes and experiences in the comments!
