Journal Entry

Friday January 1, 1965

Another year begins! Wonder what it will bring. Warm, sunny day. I gave Peggy a Toni, turned out lovely. Ray went hunting, come home this afternoon for Destry, went back to spend the nite. His mama, dady, Kathy visited this afternoon. Kids rode Destry. Made some stew in new fry pan, took Dady some.

In the 1960s, Toni perms were a popular choice for women who wanted to achieve curly hair at home without the cost of going to a salon.

My mama’s hair was completely straight, but my granny believed with all her heart that a Toni would give her daughter perfect curls.

The Toni Home Perm kit contained everything needed for the perm, including instructions, chemicals, rods, clips and rollers.

My granny would first apply the chemical solution to my mama’s hair before sectioning it out and wrapping it around perm rods. They would let this process, rinse out the chemicals and roll her hair back onto hard plastic rollers.

The results—which could be hours in the making—were usually frizzy and over-processed.

According to my mama, “She was always sure that this time it would be great. I just thought, here we go again. I don’t think the result was ever what she was hoping for, but she was undeterred until I was old enough to refuse be permed again.”
