1965: Day by Day

I heard a voice at evening softly say,

Bear not thy yesterday into tomorrow,

Nor load this week with last week’s load of sorrow,

Lift all thy burdens as they come,

Nor try to weigh the present with the by-and-by.

One step then another, take thy way

Live day by day

In Myrtle’s journal, she has this listed as being by anonymous. A quick bit of online sleuthing shows this credited to Julia Harris May, an American poet, school teacher and school founder who was born in 1883 and died in 1912. This poem is part of a longer work you can read here.
